Digital Camera: Easy Photo Taking Tips

July 24th, 2009. Published under Photography. No Comments.

Every skill requires practice before you get any better at it. Regardless of the nature and difficulty of the skill, you will need to invest time and commit to improving before you see any improvement. Much can be said about photography and how well of a photographer you become. Without any practice, you will simply be and always be a novice photographer. Until you start practicing, implementing tips, and committing time to improve your skill, then you will not get any better. Period.

So what are some ways you can improve your photo taking skills?

Be the director. Don’t just call yourself “the director”. Act like one, too. If you are snapping photos of people, don’t be afraid to call out commands (but in a nice way of course) and move people around or have them pose a certain way. With objects, move them around to your liking until you find a suitable position.

Know your camera from the inside and out. That doesn’t mean you have to rip it open and learn the mechanics, but it does mean that you should learn what your camera is and isn’t capable of. Most, if not all, digital cameras come with different settings called scene modes that can be used in different picture settings. The outcome of the pictures will be dramatically affected by what scene mode you use. For example, using the nighttime scene mode will utilize the flash differently than on its automatic setting. Get familiarized with these settings so that you know which to use under different circumstances.

Try different angles. Really. Horizontal and vertical are great, but tilting the camera at a slight angle can parent some intriguing and interesting photos. Adjusting the angle dramatically or very, very slightly can offer a dramatic flair, and your subject can be anything or anyone. Try taking pictures of buildings or spiraling stairs with the camera angled.

Spontaneity can sometimes be your friend, especially when snapping photos of people. Not everyone is photogenic and looks absolutely stunning in every single photo - even candid ones. On a side note, don’t you just hate those people? Continuing on… because not everyone can strike a pose and a smile without looking tense or forced, sometimes it’s best to catch people when they least expect it. Therefore, you can catch them in a more relaxed and natural state.

Practice often to get the desired results you want. Seek advice from photography forums and other photographers. In time, you will have know how.
