The name hobby has an interesting past to it. It is derived from the toy horse usually called hobbyhorse and from this came the expression ‘to ride one’s hobby horse’ which means following a favorite pass time.
In modern times it became a favorite recreation. Hobbies are famous around the world and have been around for some decades now. It brings a sense of pride to people who practice the hobby as they feel that they are spending their leisure in a useful manner.
Hobbies Turning into Business-
In the past people used to practice a hobby just to spend their leisure time in a useful way but more recently hobbies have turned into profitable ventures. Examples of hobbies turning into a business are woodcraft, paintings, artworks etc.
Types of Hobbies-
In the course of time people have developed a number of distinct hobbies. Some of them are as follows:
Collecting-
This is the most famous of all hobbies and collecting ranges from collecting coins, stamps, cards, antiques and even comic books. The hobby of collecting consists of collecting a particular type of item based on the interests of the collector.
The most common type of collecting hobby is coin collection. People take a lot of pride in the collection that they have and usually organize shows to display their wide and diverse collections. They may have coins belonging to different time periods and regions of the world.
Games-
A game is basically played for recreation purposes, they usually have some set of definite rules and players of the game must play the game according to its rules. The most common type of games are card games and board games and have been around for many centuries.
Outdoor Recreation-
Outdoor recreation can be sports and activities. Sports have had a huge reception among people and are followed by a huge set of people around the world. it has even turned into very big and profitable business as in EPL and IPL.
Activities are becoming famous in the recent years and are attracting more and more people. Some of the recent activities include adventure sports such as trekking, water sports and hiking.
Creative Hobbies-
There are some of the hobbies that have turned into useful or aesthetic products. Some of them are woodworking, jewelry making, paper craft etc.
The thing with these creative hobbies is that they not only results in spending your leisure in a useful way but also helps you to earn some money.
Cooking-
Cooking is basically preparing food for consumption purposes. Cooking has been a hobby for some time now. People who belong to the noble family had practiced cooking as hobby to try out new kind of dishes and desserts. It provides people who practice cooking a sense of creating something useful and that too in a quick time.
Gardening-
Gardening is a very good hobby practiced by our ancestors since time immemorial. Hanging Gardens of Babylon is a classic example of gardening being practiced by humans from a very long time. This is very useful hobby as it results in afforestation and creating more greenery around the world.
Amateur Radio & Flying Model planes-
With the advancement in technology hobbies too took their way and one such type of hobby is amateur radio and flying model planes. Amateur radio is basically a group of people transmitting low power radio signals and communicating through it.
Model planes are small miniature planes that are created by people and are controlled using a remote. They usually fly at very low heights of some few feet.
There is a famous saying that ‘an idle mind is a devil’s workshop’ and to keep your mind busy the thing that could be done is to practice a hobby. The hobby that you choose should be one that interests you and keeps you engrossed.
