Wood, as a natural resource, has been around since before the dawn of mankind. When our ancestors eventually learned to walk upright and use tools, they realized that they could carve out objects with those tools from fallen trees and create objects that are functional and utilitarian as well as elaborate and artistic.
Wood has played an immeasurably important role in the advancement of human civilization; it was used for transport to construct the first boats and ships, the wheel, carriages and even the first airplane; it was used to build houses and temples, to construct various simple mechanical devices that gave rise to more complex forms of machines.
Up until the Industrial Revolution, wood was arguably the most versatile and important building material in the world. Although the introduction of other materials such as steel, cement and concrete has replaced some of the uses of wood, it still remains an important commodity, especially in the furniture industry.
Woodworking has evolved into a much loved tradition and art, with wood crafting taking on many different forms. As long as there is wood, skilled woodworking craftsmen will always be in demand. It is a craft that requires much attention to detail and patience to learn.
Though a pleasurable pastime, woodworking is also a serious business and a career for many craftsmen. Master craftsmen learn their craft very well over the years and know how to work with many different kinds of wood. They learn the techniques and skills necessary to create works of art and specialized furniture that is beyond the skill of the casual woodworking enthusiast.
Observation and study is a crucial part of learning about woodworking. Studying old houses that utilize a lot of wood in its structure or that have a large number of wooden frames is an excellent way to learn about construction and carpentry. The same applies to furniture and cabinets and other objects constructed from wood. Remember to be observant in all you do.
For many, seeing their completed projects put to use is just as rewarding as creating it. Although it may seem daunting to a beginner to complete a full scale project, it all begins with small steps. Make small useful objects and then move on to bigger objects, for example a bookcase. Bookcases are relatively simple to build as far as large projects go and are very useful pieces of furniture.
Woodworking can be a very fulfilling hobby, but requires a lot of patience. It is not the kind of hobby that should be taken up by someone looking for instant satisfaction. Part of the enjoyment in woodworking is to take the time to appreciate the different aspects of a project, from the design to the wood to the cutting.
Patience and attention to detail are the most important factors involved when woodworking. The adage “measure twice, cut once” is both a warning and guide to woodworking, impressing the importance of making sure you have the correct measurements and designs before beginning your work.
