There are many aspects to consider when learning how to choose an assisted living facility that specifically meets the physical, medical, social, and psychological needs of an aging loved one. These aspects include the amount of medical attention needed on a daily basis, the ability, or lack thereof, of the individual to manage their own daily needs, the overall quality of the living space offered, the general atmosphere created by the staff, clients, and visitors, and, of course the overall cost of the managed care. Once all of these aspects have been taken into account, then an individual can be sure that their loved one will be happy, safe, and comfortable in the proper assisted living facility.
Most individuals are placed in a facility because of deteriorating health or other mental or physical problems; therefore, the most important factor to consider when deciding how to choose an assisted living facility is the amount and availability of medical attention. There is a wide range of options ranging from managed medical care to complete medical care. All facilities should have a full time doctor on staff (larger ones may several). All care givers should also be registered nurses with a background in elderly care. However, each individual client can have widely varying medical needs. Some people simply need help remembering which medication to take while others may need complete twenty-four hour medical care. Determine what level of medical attention your loved one requires in order to find the perfect facility for them.
When learning how to choose an assisted living facility for your loved one always visit the premises before allowing your loved one to stay. Walk around the property. Quality assisted living programs realize that overall comfort can have a positive effect on lingering medical problems and should have outdoor spaces where guests can walk around and enjoy the sun. There should be several options for entertainment including television, reading materials, art and craft projects, and many other activities designed to entertain and rejuvenate. Talk to other clients as they are the best measure of an assisted living facility success. If they are happy and comfortable then your loved ones are more likely to enjoy the facility.
Once you are sure that you have found the facility to be comfortable and enjoyable, talk to the nurses, doctors, and other associated workers. If you do not like them, then you are probably not going to trust them with the health and well being of your loved one. Ask about their credentials, working schedule, emergency protocol, and overall working environment. If they like their job, then your loved one is more likely to be comfortable and relaxed, confident in the care provided by the staff.
The last, but unfortunately the most important, aspect to consider when learning how to choose an assisted living facility is the overall cost of the care. There is no doubt that these facilities cost a lot. However, when you consider the happiness and comfort of your loved one, then the price does not seem to matter much. Always get a printed statement from the facility which should indicate the cost of food, board, medical attention, and other costs.
Choosing the right facility is difficult. However, by taking these aspects into consideration, you should be able to find the perfect assisted living facility for your loved one.
