When we talk about social networking, the first thing that usually comes to mind are sites like MySpace or Facebook. However, a social network is more than what you think it is.

When we talk about social networking, we are actually talking about people who are grouped together similar to a hobby club or a small neighborhood. Since the advent of technology and the Internet, many people have carried over their socializing activities online. The Internet is actually the perfect place for social networking because every day, millions of people use it. It is one of the primary venues that one visits if he wants to get reliable information about people, events, places, and things. The Internet is a multi-functional source that allows individuals to connect with each other.

One of the advantages of social networking is that people are given the opportunity to meet other people; individuals that come from opposite corners of the world are given the chance to connect and develop a friendship. Some users even use these social networking sites to learn some things; like a new language, or develop an interest in other historical stories and cultures.

Social networking also allows friends and family to reconnect and renew ties. In the same way, it opens up a multitude of opportunities for friends and family to continually keep in touch and keep their relationships strong.

So, how does a social network work? Online social networking uses websites called social sites. Each social site has a specific characteristic that usually point to an interest or a purpose. This characteristic is what brings individuals together. For example, movie buffs and critics can share their interests and ideas through a social network site that focuses on movies like Filmaffinity and Flixster; music lovers can get together through Imeem, while anime fanatics can go to Gaia online.

In social networks, one of the ways to get to know other individuals is to view their profiles. Profiles are similar to a resume; it contains basic personal information about a member. Most social networking sites, however, have terms of privacy in order to protect the sensitive personal information of their members.

A social networking site has terms of privacy that is meant to protect its members from online crimes like identity theft. There are also instances when members become victimized by posers claiming to be somebody they are not; while others get bedazzled by promises made by individuals or groups that claim to have the answers to problems like money and work. As in real world situations, social network users should always be extra careful when dealing with strangers. So whenever a user signs up for membership in a social networking site, it is important for him to know its terms of privacy.

Some of the most popular social networking sites, aside from MySpace and Facebook, are the following:

a.Twitter; caters to RSS and micro-blogging
b.WAYN; for lifestyle and travel
c.MyHeritage; for family-related social networking
d.LinkedIn; for business-related social networking
e.Adult FriendFinder; for adult dating
f.And of course, Imeem, Filmaffinity, Gaia Online, and
Flixster

So the next time someone asks you what social networking is, tell them it’s an online venue where you can meet people and learn new things every day.
