Pensacola Assisted Living Facilities: How to Determine Which One is Right for Your Loved One

July 9th, 2009. Published under Elder Care. No Comments.

Due to its warm climate and inviting atmosphere, the Pensacola area has always been a favorite retreat for retired individuals and the elderly which has given rise to dozens of assisted living facilities ranging from complete supervision to managed care; however, with so many Pensacola assisted living facilities available finding the right place for your loved one can be difficult. Use the following criteria in order to limit and ultimately choose your care facility: availability of appropriate medical facilities including registered nurses, onsite medical care, and the availability of professional care givers, the overall appeal of the facility (is it clean, are the other guests happy, are the residents free to walk to property, etc), and the bottom line cost of the care.

Obviously the most important criteria to consider when trying to find the right facility out of all the Pensacola assisted living facilities is the amount of available medical care. All facilities should have a doctor on call twenty-four hours a day with an appropriate number of registered nurses and care givers in order to ensure that every resident is cared for properly. Some sites even have medical facilities on site in order to ensure that medical care is given as fast as possible. You must remember that the primary concern is for the safety and health of your loved one. Therefore, carefully consider all the medical aspects of each facility you consider.

While it is important to analyze the medical capabilities of the assisted living program, it is also equally important to consider the personal aspect of the care. Do not be scared to talk to the nurses and care givers that we be assisting your loved one personally. Ask them questions about their work history, their medical area of expertise, and any other questions that will help you to determine if you trust them enough to care for your loved one. Do not hesitate to ask them personal questions. After all, if you do not like the people who are caring for your loved one, then chances are your loved one will not like them either.

Equally important is the overall appearance of the facility and the relative happiness of the residents who already live there. Ask to walk around the facility. Many of the better residences will have areas for outside recreation. These areas should be free of clutter and offer residents a calming and relaxing atmosphere from which they can feel like they are simply walking through a park. Examine the rooms of residents and determine if they are clean and sanitary. Talk to current residents and determine if they are happy and comfortable. They, after all, are the best judge of a facility’s care.

Finally, when choosing out of the many Pensacola assisted living facilities, the ultimate decision often rests on the cost of such facilities. These residences can be very expensive due the needed supervision and medical care associated with such living arrangements. While nobody wants to put a price on a loved ones comfort or care, you must remember that you are not sending your loved one to a resort. Always ask for a print out of the associated costs including the costs of room, board, and medical supplies.

By following these guidelines you can feel confident that you can give your loved one the comfort and care they need as they age.
