An exotic Mediterranean plant, marjoram is widely known for its use in the culinary arts as an aromatic herb with flavors of citrus and sweet pine. Marjoram is considered by most botanists to be a variety of oregano and both are members of the mint family. The herb is a perennial plant and grows as an under shrub.
Marjoram leaves are cultivated and used in green leafy form or dried and crushed into a powdery substance. In addition to adding a splendid flavor to a variety of meats, salad dressings and breads, marjoram is used medicinally in a vaporizer by vocalists as a tool to alleviate the symptoms of laryngitis and preserve the voice.
The term laryngitis describes an ailment of the voice box, or larynx, which houses the vocal chords in humans and other mammals. Within the voice box, sound is created and the volume and pitch of that sound is determined. When the voice box becomes inflamed, an irritation to the vocal chords occurs.
Inflammation can result from a type of viral or bacterial infection, an excess of coughing or simple overuse of the vocal chords. This can cause not only a change of pitch and volume but also creates a hoarse, raspy sound and possibly a complete loss of voice. Laryngitis can last for as little as a few days or as long as several weeks. Obviously, in professions that rely heavily on the use of voice, this can be devastating without proper treatment and symptom relief. Using marjoram in an herbal vaporizer is largely used as an aid in relieving the symptoms of laryngitis and soothing the inflammation of the voice box.
Marjoram when used in a vaporizer as an inhalant has soothing and healing properties to the lungs, sinus cavities and vocal chords. Placing a few drops of essential oil of marjoram in a steam vaporizer creates a steam vapor that can be inhaled directly by the laryngitis sufferer to calm nagging coughs, open nasal passages and clear the lungs. In addition, the soothing vapor acts as an anti-inflammatory when it passes across inflamed vocal chords to shrink swelling and bring the voice box back to its normal state.
Singers, auctioneers, motivational speakers and many other professionals that use and overuse voice in daily activities utilize the soothing properties of marjoram as an inhalant from a vaporizer. Singers especially tend to put a strain on the vocal chords with hours and hours of using the voice to create a wide range of octaves. Since they are used to not only make sound but also determine volume and pitch, the vocal chords and larynx are very sensitive to change. Marjoram inhaled from a vaporizer preserves the sensitive organ and prevents and relieves the symptoms of laryngitis.
