St Austell The Largest Cornish Town

July 21st, 2009. Published under Destinations. No Comments.

The largest town in the whole of Cornwall, even larger than the capital of the county, the city of Truro, St Austell is a vibrant town that is an ideal place to plan a Cornish holiday from.

Taking a look back through history, the town of St Austell is famed for its clay mining and china clay production. Whilst the industry may not be as large, in terms of workforce numbers, as it was a decade ago, it is still a massively popular working sector and the products of the mining are visible all over the town.

Of the many reasons to visit St Austell, the Eden Project is the primary reason for most. Situated less than two miles from the centre of St Austell, the world famous attraction is a large area that is home to various different tropical plants from around the world. The individual domes that encompass the Eden Project are each set at the relevant and appropriate temperature to reflect the natural habitat of the plants. Due to this, it is possible to see a range of plants in England that one would never see unless travelling to, for example, a tropical rainforest in South America.

Whilst not a coastal town itself, St Austell boasts a range of wonderful beaches within a close proximity to the town. The majority of Cornwalls beaches are well cared for and extremely clean, with the beaches near St Austell being no exception. Crowds of people flock to the beaches throughout the summer months, aided by the warm climate that Cornwall receives due to its southern position within the United Kingdom.

For those visitors to St Austell who love shopping, there are a variety of popular stores within central St Austell. A range of high street brands line the street, whilst there are also many local and boutique stores to satisfy the needs of those who are looking for something completely unique or slightly quirky, be it for a souvenir or themselves.

A trip to St Austell would not be complete without a visit to the famous St Austell Brewery. Over 150 years old, the brewery is known for providing a range of much loved cask ales to pubs up and down the country. Whilst there are many different types of ales brewed at the brewery, if only one is chosen to be tasted, St Austell Tribute should be the one, a luxurious cask ale that flows far too easily down the drinkers throat.

When walking through St Austell, it is possible to see two major architectural points in time. The first is in the centre of the town itself, for which a large majority of the modern day stores are housed in buildings that were created in the late 1800s. The second is more prominent in the residential side to St Austell, in which the large building boom that happened in the 1970s is visible.

The town of St Austell is one which provides a safe haven for a holiday in the Cornish county. Featuring a range of activities for all of the family, a holiday to St Austell can be as action packed or quiet and reserved as one would like.
