The County Town of Dorset, Dorchester is a wonderful market town to visit, for both the attractions it boasts in and around the town, as well as being an ideal place to base a holiday from for discovering the whole of Dorset itself.
Situated in the south east of Dorset on the southern coast of England, Dorchester benefits from fantastic weather, in comparison to the rest of the country, particularly throughout the summer months. Due to this reason, the town often receives an influx in the amount of people visiting the town from June through to September, compared to other parts of the year. Whilst some consider the town to be busier, many believe the town truly comes alive during this time of the year and has an extremely electric atmosphere due to the bustling streets.
Of the many attractions that are prominent in and around the town, the Dorset County Museum is one of the most popular. Opened in 1846, the museum is aimed at providing all who visit with a true vision of how Dorchester and the surrounding area have been throughout several decades of interesting history. The Dorset County Museum features a wide range of memorabilia from Dorchester and Dorset in generals past. From archaeology and through to natural science, the museum is a massively popular museum and one of the most visited in the whole of Dorset.
For something a little more easy going, the Durnovaria Town Walk is highly recommended. To ensure that there is a route to suit everyones ability, the Durnovaria Town Walk can take between 40 minutes and 2 hours and all routes are extremely pleasant. Although the walks vary along the way, most people start the walk at the Hardys Statue and head towards Borough Gardens. From here, the true history of the town can be seen, as the ancient Roman wall begins to appear on the left hand side.
The Durnovaria Town Walk is much loved, not only by tourists but by those who live there and makes for a welcome break away from the bustling town centre.
The Keep Military Museum is another popular attraction in Dorchester and is a showcase for the military regiments in Dorset. Situated just moments from the centre of Dorchester, the museum provides a fantastic insight into the past and current workings of a range of popular army regiments, including the Devonshire Regiment and the Royal Devon Yeomanry.
Getting to Dorchester is extremely simple, as two rail stations service the town, along with several major roads providing instant access to the extensive British motorway system, allowing routes to all of the major cities in England.
Dorchester is a town that is full of history with a comfortable modern view. Many famous people have lived in the town, including the poet Thomas Hardy and it has become full of interesting sights and attractions over the years.
