Theory Of A Deadman - Canadian Rockers

These Canadian rockers are beginning to get the recognition I feel they have always deserved with their third and current album, “Scars and Souvenirs”. The latest single, “Not Meant To Be”, is, in my opinion, their most commercial so far and is destined for big chart success both here and across the world.
The group was formed in 2001 in British Columbia, Canada where the group members lived, those members being Tyler Connolly, Dean Back, and Dave Brenner. They originally had a drummer, Tim Hart, but when he left the group they continued as a trio and use ‘guest’ drummers when touring!
Their style can be described as heavy rock tinged with a touch of country and grunge, and they have often been compared to Nickelback.
There IS some connection between the two Canadian bands. Theory Of A Deadman’s front man Tyler Connolly played guitar on the Chad Kroeger song “Hero” from the film Spiderman, and a Theory of a Deadman song “Invisible man” was on the B-Side of that single. This collaboration arose from Connolly giving a demo tape of the group to Kroeger, who liked what he heard! “Invisible Man” has also been featured in the CW series “Smallville”.
Their first, self-titled, album was released in 2002 to critical acclaim, followed by “Gasoline” in 2005. They are currently promoting the new album touring the USA and will be appearing at Cruefest 2 with, among others, Godsmack and, of course, Motley Crue.
Albums released are “Theory Of A Deadman” (2002) “Gasoline” (2005) and “Scars and Souvenirs” (2008) with a total of 12 singles being released from the three albums so far.
Where did the name come from? It was the working title of a song Connolly was writing before the formation of the group about a man who commits suicide after writing his memoirs. The song title became the group’s title!
The group are currently signed to Roadrunner Records after initially being signed by Kroeger to his own company. The group’s success has been mostly in specialist rock charts so far rather than the mainstream Top 100, but they have had two number one hits in Canada.
One track from their latest album, “By The Way”, features the voice of Chris Daughtry, ex American Idol contestant, and himself now very successful with his own band. “Scars and Souvenirs” was certified “Gold” in April 2009, selling 500,000 copies in the U.S.A.
Theory are one of the groups I listen to most, and I hope they are destined for much more commercial success.
