U2 never does anything on a small scale. Case and point: their current “U2 360 Tour” is taking them on an epic journey through space and time. Okay, literally, it’s just around the globe…but don’t you get the feeling that if there is extraterrestrial life somewhere out there they would be listening to U2? The band is currently in France, having already showed Paris a good time, as they take on the charming seaside town of Nice.
Something about a massive rock band amplifying the speakers in quaint Nice seems odd, but there are U2 fans in Nice…and clearly they must be accommodated. Never mind you fancy-pantsy tourists looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway from all things loud. I digress, U2 is perhaps the best rock band out on the scene today and though subtlety is not their scene, it is a testament to their worldly and universal appeal. In other words, they can be as loud as they want, as millions of people are listening. Catch U2 live with your own pair of U2 tickets online.
It was during the early 1980s that U2 first started gaining a following, especially with the Lillywhite-produced War, which entered the U.K. charts at number one and also hit the American charts at number 12 position. War stood out among the band’s previous albums because of its striking political message (a theme that U2 would revisit in later record as well). The album thrived thanks to the huge success of tracks like “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “New Year’s Day.”
For their follow-up U2 offered The Unforgettable Fire in 1984. Again, the album earned respectable marks on the chart in both the U.K. and the U.S. It featured the popular tune, “Pride (In the Name of Love),” a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. Each release was making U2 one of the most popular rock bands in the world, but it wasn’t until Joshua Tree in 1987 that they became superstars. The album became the first American number one hit for the group as it went platinum in less than 28 hours. Tracks featured on the album include “With or Without You” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” Their supporting tour became a huge success, landing the band members on the covers of various magazine publications.
The band took a hiatus towards the end of the ’80s but reconvened at the start of the new decade, releasing Achtung Baby, which spawned the more electronic sounding hits “Mysterious Ways” and “One.” Later on they recorded the theme song for the movie Batman Forever, “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me,” as well as the collaborative album Passengers, which did not receive positive reviews, nor did their follow-up, Pop.
All That You Can’t Leave Behind was released in 2000 and saw the band reclaiming positive reviews thanks to the tracks “Beautiful Day” and “Walk On.” In 2004 How to Dismantle a Time Bomb hit the top of the charts and earned the group eight Grammy Awards. Their most recent album, No Line on the Horizon has also fared well amongst fans and critics.
