Where To Get The Best Deals In Electronics

July 21st, 2009. Published under Technology. No Comments.

Do you remember when the first cell phone was made available to the market? The clunky, ugly, pretty-much-useless-except-for-making-and-receiving-phone-calls device was about $400 to $500 a pop. Do you remember when the first CD player was made available? You might not, depending on how old you are, but I can tell you that those babies were expensive, too!

It’s always like that in the beginning .Whenever a new electronic is introduced, it’s expensive as all get out. Take, for example, the new LED televisions that Samsung unveiled just a few months ago. A stunning TV, no doubt. But at close to $3,000 for a 46-inch? Who are you kidding? There are just a handful of people who could probably afford a device that expensive at the moment, given the current economic situation.

Luckily, there is a way around getting the home theater system of your dreams without breaking the bank (or resorting to robbing it), so to speak. If you know where to look, you will find good deals, great deals, awesome deals on electronic devices that you only dreamed of having. The key to finding these treasures is to be smart about it. Scavenge, scavenge, and scavenge some more for these treasures. You might be surprised to find the best deals in weird places.

New is always better, but you might not get lucky and find a brand new LED TV with the budget you have. So the next best thing is second hand. Now before you go out on a limb and snag all used electronics, there is one thing to keep in mind. Make sure that you know what you are getting. If you are purchasing second hand from a retail store, make sure you ask about the factory warranty or any extended warranties that the store might be able to offer you. If you buy from someone else, make sure you ask for the receipt to verify the purchase date, just to make sure they are not trying to weasel you.

Online sites are a gold mine, but only if you know how to work it. Craig’s List could be your best friend or your worst enemy. Do not ever, under any circumstances, send money through money sites such as Western Union. Chances are, the seller will just run off with your money. No matter how good the deal sounds, do not do it. Period. Always meet locally and try to negotiate the price but do not lowball anyone. If a seller is taking best offers, make sure that you don’t go too low or they might write you off completely.

Online classifieds are not your only source. Try the newspaper and look out for special sales at electronics stores - both major and minor - in your area. Big-time stores such as Best Buy and Fry’s Electronics hold sales regularly, particularly during a holiday and on weekends. Take advantage of those discounts, and sign up for any newsletters or publications that will grant you additional discounts. Check the paper for local businesses with sales as well. You just might find way better prices at the little guys’ rather than the big guys’ store.
